Coming of Age

February 12th, 2008

I really should explain my absence over the past few weeks, lest some people begin to assume the worst, or start stockpiling pitchforks and torches and looking up my address.  Yes, everything is fine, better than fine actually, things are going really well. I just got back from a fairly short notice 10 day trip to Rarotonga, filming a documentary. Work has been coming in pretty regularly, and we’ve been able to keep the wolf from the door. Theres a potentially very large and lucrative directing job coming up in April that is a direct result of a producer seeing and liking ‘Mitsabi’s Dream’, so I have you guys to thank for that if it happens. But theres been one major factor thats been keeping the comic on the back burner and taking precedence over all else.

One word. Baby.

Baby’s not even here yet, and he (or she, we’re not sure) is already having a major effect on our lives. A lot of energy is being put into making sure that our house is baby friendly, including new mould resistant paint on the walls and ceilings, new carpets, ‘Totally’ rearranging the house (No more tangles of electrical cables all over the floor)…all this and more is what consumes our minds now.

It really is a total mental shift, its hard to describe. Things that seemed incredibly important before somehow become trivial.  Relationships are changed, and in most cases enriched (All of our friends seem to be popping sprogs at the moment as well). It feels like…well, for want of a better term, it feels like growing up.

That may seem like a scary concept, and I did my fair share of freaking out in the first few weeks (Bye bye freedom! Bye bye independence! Hello Nappysan!) But now…I’m cool with the idea of being a dad. I’m actually looking forward to it, and I like to think I’ll be quite good at it.

Quite frankly, I’m a very different person to the one that started this webcomic waaaay back in 2002. A better person. I have more directon, more drive, and I’m certainly far busier. What does this mean for Angels? In the long run, nothing. I haven’t forgotten my promise, this comic will be finished, and I even have a long awaited and much requested suprise that will be ready by the end of the month. I can’t promise that there won’t be more unexpected stalls over the next few weeks (BG is due mid April) but I’m doing my best to meet all my obligations.
